The Artist

Lomédy Mhako

Lomédy Mhako (b. 1989, Shamva) lives and works in Harare, Zimbabwe. He is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores themes of vulnerability, social experience and the emotional weight carried within everyday life. That includes sculpture, painting, installations and digital art which allows him to move well between mediums while maintaining a strong material and symbolic presence.

Placing marginalized people and their lived experiences at the center of his practice, Mhako reflects on the quiet struggles, resilience and survival strategies that often remain unseen within society. He works primarily with wood, textile, thread and found domestic materials, which he refers to as rurimi rwamai (mother's tongue).

Mhako transforms familiar objects into powerful visual languages that speak about the body, memory and social realities often left unspoken. His work draws from the textures and materials of everyday life, using them as carriers of personal and collective narratives.

Artist Statement

“My practice is centered around the less privileged community, therefore it shapes my work as a reflection of the times we living in which I believe are quite desperate thus one cannot help but get involved.”
